Walter Hofer / Swiss TZ: Sumani Pump Irrigation Project
Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) assisted the Indonesian partner – Public Works (PU) in the planning, implementation and operation of the Sumani Pump Irrigation Project. Geographically it was not located in West Pasaman, but along the shores of lake Singkarak in the Districts of Solok and Danah Datar.
The Project manager was Walter Hofer until 1984. He was supported by a team of various professionals, e. g. Agricultural extension, civil engineers, etc. Both teams from SDC and GTZ worked closely together in various aspects of rural development, in particular in rice irrigation systems and their organization (P3A).
As most of the Swiss TZ expatriate families were resident in Padang there were as well many social contacts. One highlight was the joint operation and responsibility of the school, then known as Wilhelm-Busch-Schule (WBS).
